“I have been putting this on most of my tracks and loving it in a great way! This one fixes digital drums very well, it really smoothes out the highs and hugs the music. My favorite so far.”

S-DER A80 Master Tape Recorder

Tape depth. Analog glue. Mastering-grade warmth.

The S-DER A80 is not about heavy saturation or obvious coloration — it’s about bringing the subtle depth, cohesion, and dimensionality that made professional analog tape machines a cornerstone of countless classic records.

From low-frequency solidity and smooth transient behavior to gentle harmonic enhancement and stereo glue, the A80 delivers the unmistakable feel of a mix passing through a world-class mastering tape recorder.

This collection captures both 15 ips and 30 ips operating speeds, allowing you to choose between the fuller, warmer character of slower tape speeds and the cleaner, more extended response of faster tape operation.

Special thanks to Mr. Nakamura for generously sharing this exceptional machine and making this capture possible.

What’s Included

A collection of S-DER A80 tape machine profiles captured from both channels of the recorder at two tape speeds.

Profiles included:

  • S-DER A80 – 15ips CH1
Warm low-end extension, enhanced tape density, and classic analog glue.
    Tape Speed: 15 ips / Channel: 1
  • S-DER A80 – 15ips CH2
Warm low-end extension, enhanced tape density, and classic analog glue.
    Tape Speed: 15 ips / Channel: 2
  • S-DER A80 – 30ips CH1
Cleaner response with extended bandwidth and refined transient detail.
    Tape Speed: 30 ips / Channel: 1
  • S-DER A80 – 30ips CH2
Cleaner response with extended bandwidth and refined transient detail.
    Tape Speed: 30 ips / Channel: 2

True Stereo Operation

The original hardware features independently operating channels, each with its own unique analog behavior and subtle sonic characteristics.

To preserve this authenticity, every profile pair was captured independently from each channel of the original hardware.

Unlike conventional stereo processing, the Left and Right channels are not duplicated. Each profile retains its own unique analog fingerprint, closely reflecting the behavior of the original unit.

For the intended experience, load the matching CH1 and CH2 profiles using TSC Rack’s L/R Split mode. This preserves the natural depth, width, and dimensionality of the original hardware.

Sound Characteristics

  • 15 ips delivers greater warmth, density, and low-frequency weight
  • 30 ips provides improved clarity, transient definition, and bandwidth
  • Tape compression gently smooths peaks and enhances cohesion
  • Natural harmonic saturation adds depth without harshness
  • Independent channel captures preserve authentic stereo character

Audio Demo

Compare the original hardware signal and the NAM profile across a range of sources — full mixes, drums, bass, vocals, and more.
Each example demonstrates how closely the profile captures the harmonic character, tape compression, and stereo depth of the hardware.
The NAM and hardware samples are gain-matched to allow for a more accurate evaluation of the capture’s fidelity.
For additional context, a dry (unprocessed) version is also included.

Why this capture is different

  • Both 15 ips and 30 ips tape speeds captured
  • Channel 1 and Channel 2 profiled independently
  • Designed specifically for authentic dual-mono stereo operation
  • Consistent calibration across all profiles
  • Optimized for mix buss, mastering, and stereo enhancement duties

Waveform Comparison (Hardware vs NAM)

Technical notes

  • Format: NAM (.nam)
  • Sample Rate: 48kHz
  • Capture Type: Real hardware
  • Calibration: Studio-level gain staging
  • Stereo Configuration: Dual Mono (CH1 + CH2)

Gain Staging Advice

Our captures are pre-calibrated at -18 dBFS input level.
For best results, we recommend feeding the plugin with an input signal close to -18 dBFS.

As with real tape machines, input level significantly affects the resulting saturation and compression behavior.

Lower levels will produce a cleaner, more transparent response, while hotter signals will generate increased harmonic density, tape compression, and analog coloration.

Please level-match carefully when comparing profiles to better evaluate tonal differences rather than perceived loudness.

I had been waiting for a proper, professional Studer-style tape capture for NAM for a long time, and this is exactly what I was hoping for. The S-DER A80 pack gives me the tape tone I wanted without feeling exaggerated or gimmicky. It adds that real sense of weight, glue, depth, and smoothness that I associate with a great tape machine, while still keeping the source intact.
