“Great profiles, one of the best available”

S-PL ION Mastering Compressor

Precision control. Tube depth. Mastering-grade compression.

The ION is not about obvious compression — it’s about refinement.

Designed for mastering applications, it shapes dynamics with precision while adding depth, clarity, and subtle tube character that enhances the entire mix without compromising detail.

From transparent stereo glue and gentle dynamic control to rich vari-mu warmth and harmonic depth, the ION delivers the kind of sophisticated compression typically found at the final stage of professional mastering chains.

This is a rare and carefully captured collection of profiles, offering a level of control, dimensionality, and tonal flexibility not commonly found in NAM libraries.

Now updated with independently captured Left and Right channel profiles for authentic True Stereo operation using TSC Rack’s L/R Split mode.

True Stereo Operation

The original hardware features independently operating channels, each with its own unique analog behavior and subtle sonic characteristics.

To preserve this authenticity, every profile pair was captured independently from each channel of the original hardware.

Unlike conventional stereo processing, the Left and Right channels are not duplicated. Each profile retains its own unique analog fingerprint, closely reflecting the behavior of the original unit.

For the intended experience, load the matching CH1 and CH2 profiles using TSC Rack’s L/R Split mode. This preserves the natural depth, width, and dimensionality of the original hardware.

Sound Characteristics

  • True stereo captures preserve authentic channel behavior and stereo depth
  • Dynamics are controlled with precision and transparency
  • Subtle tube harmonics add depth without harshness
  • Compression enhances cohesion while preserving detail
  • Vari-mu compression remains smooth and musical across a wide range of gain reduction settings
  • Independent channel captures maintain natural width and dimensionality

Audio Demo

Compare the original hardware signal and the NAM profile across a range of sources — full mixes, drums, vocals, acoustic instruments, and more.
Each example demonstrates how closely the profile captures the dynamics response, tube harmonics, and stereo character of the hardware.
The NAM and hardware samples are gain-matched to allow for a more accurate evaluation of the capture’s fidelity.
For additional context, a dry (unprocessed) version is also included.

Why this capture is different

  • True stereo Left and Right channel captures
  • Designed for authentic dual-mono mastering workflows
  • Multiple compression styles ranging from transparent control to rich vari-mu coloration
  • Independent channel profiling preserves natural stereo imaging
  • Consistent calibration across all stereo profile pairs
  • Rare mastering hardware capture not commonly available in NAM format

Technical notes

  • Format: NAM (.nam)
  • Sample Rate: 48kHz
  • Capture Type: Real hardware
  • Calibration: Mastering-grade gain staging
  • Stereo Configuration: True Stereo (Independent L/R Captures)

Gain Staging Advice

Our captures are pre-calibrated at -18 dBFS input level.
For best results, we recommend feeding the plugin with an input signal close to -18 dBFS.

As with the original hardware, input level affects both compression behavior and harmonic response.

Lower levels provide maximum transparency, while hotter signals introduce additional tube density, harmonic richness, and dynamic control.

Please adjust the Output control as needed and level-match carefully when comparing profiles.

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

I’ve spent a lot of time with the original hardware unit in various studios, and the hardest thing to capture is always that specific ‘iron’ transformer saturation and the way the dual-tube circuit glues the low-mids. Most digital emulations feel a bit flat, but these Tokyo Studio Capture profiles for NAM are on another level.

The transient response is remarkably close to the real deal. I tried the ‘Mastering Comp’ profile on a folk-rock project today, and it added that expensive, finished sheen without the typical ‘digital’ congestion. It’s got that weight and authority you expect from the IRON.

If you’re using NAM for mixing and mastering, these are an absolute no-brainer. Can’t wait to see what else TSC has in the pipeline. 5/5.
